Cooking with the OSS
I remember watching a lot of Julia Child's cooking show when I was growing up. I think it was on PBS, along with other fav's Mr. Rogers, Reading Rainbow, and Romper Room (not to put those shows in the same category).
Before becoming the Chef that we know and love Julia was working for the United States Government's pre-CIA intelligence agency called OSS (Office of Strategic Services). Who knew that the same woman I was watching cook fantastic chicken and fish dishes once also worked for the US Government as a spy?
In the 1940's during WWII, Julia was assigned to create a shark repellent to coat the mines that the Navy planted for the German U-Boats. The curious sharks would bump into the mines setting them off, and in turn alerting the Germans as to the whereabouts of the explosives!
I know this isnt "new" news, but it's interesting nonetheless!
"So... Julia Child and a few of her male compatriots got together and literally cooked up a shark repellent," that was used to coat the explosives, McCarthy says.

Light verse, ripped from the headlines
Nicely done Kevin Pierce...
Julia Child received an honorary degree at my university the year I graduated. As I crossed the platform in the slow motion and silence of memories, right hand extended to shake the chancellor's, left hand reaching for my leather encased diploma, I looked over at the honorary guest sitting amongst the deans...I zoomed in to her mature face, her eye sparkled and the corner of her mouth lifted in a grin...I was thinking, "Deviance-" before a grasp of my hand and an applause snapped my attention. An uncharacteristically intuitive and odd moment that seems to fit oddly into the aforementioned puzzle...
As for the scent of intelligence, do be careful of the aroma of waffles my friend...this conspiracy has long been in the making. Do not underestimate Julia's entailed influence, the depths of which were never uncovered. Her projects continue from the grave, quote: "'[I] felt like Child was in [my]head...I realized that if I didn’t have the project, I didn’t have anything,' she says. 'The project had become the center of my life.'" http://www.nashuatelegraph.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20051023/BOOKS/110230112
