In one of the most iconic scenes in cinema history, Richard Dreyfuss of Jaws cuts open the stomach of a shark to reveal a crushed tin can and a licence plate. Auckland Museum recreates this incredible operation when with public necropsy, or animal autopsy, on a 3.0 metre long, 300 kg Great White Shark on Thursday, 8 January.

The event, run in collaboration with the Department of Conservation, is to raise awareness of the threats facing this magnificent and vulnerable species, and to dispel the unfortunate myths surrounding it.

The female large Great White Shark was retrieved in the Kaipara Harbour on Monday last week, entangled and dead in a gill net. The fisherman notified the Department of Conservation Auckland Area staff who recovered the shark.

The Great White Shark is protected in New Zealand. It is not against the law to accidentally kill a Great White Shark, but it is illegal not to inform the Department of Conservation if one is caught or killed. The necropsy will be carried out by Clinton Duffy of the Department of Conservation Marine Conservation Section and Dr. Tom Trnski, Marine Curator of the Auckland Museum.

"This is a rare opportunity for people to get a close look at a Great White, and to see how scientists find out more about the complexities of the natural world through their research," says Dr. Trnski. "Little is known about the life history of these apex predators of the ocean, and we hope to learn more about the shark's recent past before it came into the harbour."

The operation will examine the shark's stomach contents, take measurements of internal organs, as well as investigating the gills and removing the jaws.

The public are invited to view the autopsy and come face to face with the shark from 11am-1pm in the loading dock at the south-eastern corner of the Museum.

Ok, so I have been following this for awhile, but this is a great looking, fan-made, movie that is coming out based on the MGS Franchise. Its beating Kojima's actual MGS movie to the Screen! Well.. seeing as how there prob. isn't even a script for the real-deal yet, this will do, and Ill be damned if it doesn't look like they did a decent job! Even Otocon's voice, and the way they present "cut-scene" like footage. Its going to be fun at least, I hope its as good as it is true to the series.

Sale of marijuana within 1,000 feet of a school adds another 2-year mandatory minimum sentence for sale and can go as high as an additional 15 years in prison and a fine of $1,000 - $10,000.

The manufacture or sale of paraphernalia is punishable by 1 - 2 years in prison and a fine of $500 - $5,000, unless the sale was to a minor, in which case the penalty is 3 - 5 years in prison and a fine of $1,000 - $5,000.

Conditional release: The state allows conditional release or alternative or diversion sentencing for people facing their first prosecutions. Usually, conditional release lets a person opt for probation rather than trial. After successfully completing probation, the individual's criminal record does not reflect the charge.

Mandatory minimum sentence: When someone is convicted of an offense punishable by a mandatory minimum sentence, the judge must sentence the defendant to the mandatory minimum sentence or to a higher sentence. The judge has no power to sentence the defendant to less time than the mandatory minimum. A prisoner serving an MMS for a federal offense and for most state offenses will not be eligible for parole. I can clearly remember the countless hours spent in Shufflepuck Cafe playing the drunken alien, the whore witch, and the angry general. Its one of my earliest gaming memories, something which I hold dear. I loves me my video games. And then Arkanoid, another all time favorite. Who can say ANYTHING bad about this game!!?? On another note, I recently read Peter Benchley's JAWS... I liked the movie much better. I felt that Benchley spent too much time on some pointless character development, and not enough time on Great Whites eating people. I will say I like some of the end of the book better. Like Quints demise, and what happened to Hooper. I wont spoil it, but im guessing that the movie version had Dreyfus testing well with audiences.. or something like that, so they changed the ending. Dont quote me on that though.

I came across a great little write up of Katie Couric's interview with McCain and Palin from CBS Evening News. I am linking to the article below, and ill hit on some key points here that will hopefully make you think about how ridiculous these people are. McCain just comes across as an angry old man to me, and Palin... jesus I don't know...

Again, this is just quick. I could go into more detail, and prob. should... but I wont.

1. Couric asked Palin about a statement she made regarding the US launching an offense on Pakistan to "stop the terrorists from coming any further in." . She asked if Palin and McCain were on the same page on this, as McCain had said otherwise during Friday's debate.

Couric: "So, Gov. Palin are you two (she and McCain) on the same page?"

Palin: "...We will do what we have to do to secure the United Sates and her allies,"

Couric: "Is that something you shouldn't say out loud, Sen. McCain?"

McCain :"Of course not," . "But look, I understand this day and age gotcha journalism... Grab a phrase. Gov. Palin and I agree that you don't announce that you're going to attack another country."

Couric to Palin : "Are you sorry you said it?"

McCain: "Wait a minute," "Before you say is she sorry she said it, this was a gotcha sound bite that...

Couric: "It wasn't a gotcha," "She was talking to a voter."

McCain: "No,she was in a conversation with a group of people talking back and forth, and I'll let Gov. Palin speak for herself."

Couric to Palin: (what has she learned) "from that experience," the candidate replied, "That this is all about gotcha journalism...."

Ok, so lets break this down really quick. Palin said something without thinking about it, just threw out some word vomit in the vein of what some people may want to hear to gain some support, and Couric is calling her out on it. It backfired. The Gotcha Journalism quip that McCain so quickly spouted really gives me a sour taste. I def. don't want to be voting for a person that is going to play games like that. Palin fucking said what she said! It wasn't made up, she said it! Don't try to back track.

The Philidelphia Bomb Squad had a busy afternoon blowing up some meat at Citizens Bank Park. "Several" suspicious packages were discovered outside the park near one of the ticket offices and the stadium was temporarily evacuated (except for the players... go figure) while it was determined what the packages were. They turned out to be hot dogs wrapped in foil and duct tape.

Ok. Breast milk week here at catsattackyou. This is the 2nd BM story I have come across this week, and I'm only posting about it because a friend mentioned it as well, which proves its disgusting relevance.

Lets start with PETA . The world famous animal rights foundation has asked that Ben and Jerry's replace cow milk with human breast milk in their ice-cream products. The quick and dirty on this, is that they believe that they believe that there are legitimate health issues to take into consideration, for both the human and bovine players. They present a legitimate case, that no one will ever pay attention to. Though.. I am MORE than willing to bet... that this will turn into some really gross and disturbing fad. Also mentioned in both the letter and the article, is yet another bit of news on breast milk being used for adult human consumption.

First of all, that took balls. To grow that much Marijuana (which we all know is illegal!! HA!) in a public place... wow. Second, I hate reading bullshit in published material. "worth millions of dollars"? OK. The average idiot would buy that story... but then... Oh look! I have found another segment ON THE SAME NETWORK that has this to say about another find in April of this year.

ALSO... from Central Florida 13 News
"LAKE COUNTY -- Deputies busted what they called the largest and most sophisticated marijuana growing operations they've ever seen."
"Inside investigators said they found an estimated 2,000 pot plants, with a street value of at least $2 million."

How do 200 plants become worth millions of dollars, when 2000 plants is worth an estimated $2 million? Last I checked 2000 is more than 200. But correct me if I am wrong.

I am just using this story as an example. It is important to not base your decisions on one source of information. If you read something, and think its bullshit, then look into it more (Google) and find multiple sources to make your own assessment.

I love Google. I really do. As big brother as they kinda are.. I still love them. Here was an interesting bit I found this evening and wanted to share. Apparently cows may have some sort of magnetic sense that causes them to stand in a N/S facing direction sometimes. I do that too. Sometimes. Another interesting myth/old wives tale/factoid (which you should know already.. but let me remind you like "That Guy"), is that cows sometimes lay down when it is going to rain. This isnt proven, but I have noticed it before (having grown up across the street from a farm). I just read that this could be caused by the barometric pressure causing the cows stomachs to be upset causing them to lie down. Weird. Moving on... here is why I am posting!

Another good Carey quote, that I am unable to find online was something along the lines of "If you need a game to enjoy drinking, then you shouldn't be drinking". It was from a stand up performance that Comedy Central plays occasionally.

The reason I bring this up is a recent TIME magazine article (see here) that references the current war on Beirut (AKA Beer Pong). This is the one and ONLY drinking game I ever enjoyed. It actually takes some skill, sober or not, and it's fun to play. I can definitely understand why college campuses or towns might want to put a cap on the game for safety or noise violation reasons.. but come on.

I ALSO find it interesting that this comes up as many colleges and some states (VT) are looking to lower the drinking age to 18 again. I personally think this could go either way... I see the dangers, and the possible benefits of this. In reality... kids are going to drink whether or not they are told they can or cant. But I bet its more likely they will drink MORE if they are told that they cannot. Think about these same kids showing up to college, away from their parents for the first times... free to do whatever they want. Yeah. Drunk. MIT is a great example of this.

I remember watching a lot of Julia Child's cooking show when I was growing up. I think it was on PBS, along with other fav's Mr. Rogers, Reading Rainbow, and Romper Room (not to put those shows in the same category).

Before becoming the Chef that we know and love Julia was working for the United States Government's pre-CIA intelligence agency called OSS (Office of Strategic Services). Who knew that the same woman I was watching cook fantastic chicken and fish dishes once also worked for the US Government as a spy?

In the 1940's during WWII, Julia was assigned to create a shark repellent to coat the mines that the Navy planted for the German U-Boats. The curious sharks would bump into the mines setting them off, and in turn alerting the Germans as to the whereabouts of the explosives!

I know this isnt "new" news, but it's interesting nonetheless!

Tourettes Guy

On a side note. I was in the grocery store a few weeks ago and there was a girl prob. in her mid 20's that had a horrible case of Tourettes. She walked into the store, and then had such a bad fit from the disease, that she literally had to walk right through to the other end of the store and back outside without buying ANYTHING. Everyone was staring at her as she barked out random words/sounds and the occasional swear (im assuming that was more out of frustration), and she looked so upset. It must be really hard to live on your own with a disease like that, where you cant control (in some cases) what you say or do. Do yourself a favor and think twice when you see something like that, and instead of just staring or laughing, offer the person some help.

On another note (unrelated) I went to Ace Hardware the other day to find a part for an electric cart that I had broken. They didnt have it, so the employee took it home and fixed it for me! For Free! Thanks nice Ace Hardware guy!

I read another great Web Comic called Multiplex by Gordon McAlpin on the Internet (thats the thing with the email... right?). Gordon also has a wonderful little News blog with some kickass (legit!) info on upcoming films called Movie Make Out. When you are done checking out Multiplex and M-MO, take a moment and watch the trailer for THE NEW TERMINATOR FILM! I am excited for two reasons.... one.. because I love the terminator films, and two because Christian Bale is John Connor. I think he is one of the best actors on the scene right now, and this could wash out the awful aftertaste of that last piece of shit T3.

I really cannot believe that I have not posted Nirvana sooner. I am a huge fan, and have been (honestly) since I think October 1991 when I my mother got me Nevermind on cassette at the Topsfield Fair. I do not remember however, if I had actually heard Nirvana before I got the cassette... I think I was just being bratty and wanted SOMETHING. So I got the naked baby tape.

Anway... moving on... Here is a great listen for you! The recording isnt top quality, but is far from bad. Also, I find that Kurts vocals are especially great on this recording. First of all... I am extremely fucking angry right now. As most Americans should be. I just spent $75.00 filling up my wife's Jeep with 18 gallons of wonderful gasoline.

I dont want to hear a fucking word from you (reader) or anyone else regarding the fact that it's an SUV and a gas guzzler. It was aquired for about $5000 5 years ago, and its a 1998 Jeep... we didn't just buy it... it's 10 years old. I personally drive a 20 year old Volvo 240. Know why? Because we cant afford new vehicles.

The people that say "sell your gas guzzler and buy a Green Car" are the ones that have expendable cash and big mouths and they can bend over so that I can stick my entire leg up their ass. Fuck you Hippie. Join the real world.

So... after that rant... Meet Stephen Simon. He is the man in the above photo, and he made 12.5 Million Dollars last year. Let me spell that out for you.

Ill give to him, that he seems to have worked really hard to get where he is. Joining the company back in 1967, and then after a short stint in the military (thank you) returned to the company and has been with them almost ever since (Esso Italiana which is mentioned in his Bio is owned by Exxon).
This makes me want to give him some leeway... hard working guy makes his way to the top... feel good story of the week. But... because this man has worked this hard, because this man has spent time in the military.. he should KNOW what its like to be you and me or someone with even less. Im fucking lucky to have a computer to type my opinions out on. Im lucky to have a home and a wife and two cars, and my first child on the way, and this guy makes 12.5 million last year. He was in Operations Manager at Exxon's Baton Rouge refineries in the 1980's! Remember what happened there in 2005? If not you live in a cave (thankfully sheltered from the news and their crap) but hurricane Katrina happened then.

Stephen Simon... Please help us with the gas prices. You are helping kill this country.

So... now I have lost steam... Im just mad that Oil Companies like Exxon are showing record profits and guys like Mr. Simon are pulling in cash like 12 Mil. and I can barely afford to go to work right now.

Oh... why is the gas so hard on me? Its not the driving... its the lack of it. It takes me as much as two hours for me to drive 30 Miles. While I sit in traffic on Route 95 sucking fumes every morning on my way to work because people haven't figured out the gas pedal is the one on the right. PAY THE FUCK ATTENTION AND DRIVE YOUR CARS DAMMIT!

Thanks to GW for passing this along. Pretty disturbing story of blatant disregard for animal welfare in China. Not that it is a big surprise really, based on where this story is coming from, but it still sucks.
Quick quip... a company in China marketed this High Selling products with an Olympics Mascot on a clear plastic key chain that jails a goldfish. The fish cannot be removed without breaking the product, which also means it cannot be fed. This reminds me of those big shoes from (the 70's?...) that had fish in the heel.

Meet Brian Barnes. Brian is a Storm Chaser, one of those crazy guys that runs around the Midwest's "Tornado Alley" studying storms. He also runs storm watching tours through Violent Skies Tours where you can go with them, and see these monstrous thunderstorms first hand.

Brian made the news recently while working in Crane's County Texas. A sherrif's deputy decided that Brian was endangering himself and others while parked on the side of the road taking data on the storm for the NWS (National Weather Service). After explaining what he was doing there, he was told by the officer said the he didnt care, and that he needed to go.
Brian didnt go... so he was arrested and later released on a $2000 bond. Here is a link with a bit more depth from KWES News I think that this is a blatant abuse of power, and was completely unnecessary. I wasn't there, but I think I have a pretty good idea of how that went down, and i think its bullshit.

Anyway, the other reason I posted this, is that I have always wanted to record a good thunderstorm. Both Audio and Video. Now my plan is to someday record a storm out on the plains in HD video, and record the audio to mix to Surround Sound. How awesome would it be to watch that on a huge flatscreen TV with 5.1 ? Super Awesome, thats how.

The 2nd album from Boston's own Pixies. Not really a bad track to be named on this record, however my personal stand-outs are Debaser and Monkey Gone to Heaven.
Do enjoy! Then go pick up some more records. Casual listener? Pick up "Death to the Pixies" or the more in depth "Wave of Mutilation" which should give you a better idea of what this band does. You may also want to look into Frank Black's solo stuff, or Kim Deal's awesome band The Breeders (that awesome Cannonball song from the 90's... remember the "Pants" skit from MTV's "The State" ? )
On a side note.... I just learned moments ago that un chien andalusia is based on Un Chien Andalou a French film from the late 1920's. Now the rest of Debaser's wild lyrics make more sense to me. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Un_Chien_Andalou

Another interesting note... Salvador Dali is in the above mentioned movie! Yes, the same artist possibly most well known for The Persistence of Memory or as you may remember it, the "Melting Clocks" painting that has been copied in various forms.. including by the Far Side's Gary Larson, and The Simpsons.

What a damn fine record this is. Released in 1995, this was the bands big debut record.
Their second album found success with the single "Hot" which is what you may be more familiar with as it was played constantly on the radio. So rock and such. Enjoy.

As soon as I wrote the title I thought of another great post, so you will be getting some great Leonard Cohen stuff soon. Ill prob. make some sort of compilation of my favorite stuff of his to put up for you.

In the meantime... I bring you NoMeansNo. An amazing Canadian band that had a sound ahead of their time. This record is actually a set of two 80's Full Lengths. Great stuff. Note how the vocals sound an awful lot like Henry Rollins... I actually thought for a second that it was him singing!

I am not completely against hunting, or some controlled killing of wild animals for environmental reasons (if they are legit...) but when I see an animal like this that makes its way into the city or some area where it has not been seen for 100 years or so, get shot and killed, it really sets me off. They could have just as easily captured it and released it.

A co-worker of mine informed me of this band, and I could have kicked myself for not already knowing about them. The Knitters feature John, Exene and DJ from the awesome band X.
Though I prefer some of their other recordings that I have heard, this is still a great record.
I found it in NYC @ Generations over the weekend. A great record store if you ever get a chance to stop in.

Run your car on water???

Ok, I just read about this mins. ago, and watched a video on youtube from Fox26 News ( im not judging Fox, or taking sides, just watching a video) and this is Fucking Awesome. I want to try this in my shitty Pontiac just to see if it works.

We have all heard of Hydrogen vehicles, and the first thing that comes to my mind when thinking of this is a highway full of mounted human bombs. We would all be like little terrorists driving around! However, instead of storing the hydrogen in a fuel cell or whatever they want to call it, this new take on the technology burns the converted Hydrogen direct, at a supposedly safer 60PSI.

I have seen cars run on vegetable oil, and I have seen the Hybrid Battery Video Game Wonder that is the Prius (thanks Dlo, way to save the planet!), but I am very curious to see how this works in person.

For good reason, White Rabbit is one of those songs that makes me feel like I am on drugs, and marching through hell. It's a similar feeling I get when listening to Black Sabbath's "Black Sabbath".

That being said, it is a song written and recorded by Grace Slick sometime in the 60's, but the version that most of us are familiar with was Grace's version with Jefferson Airplane.

A co-worker of mine brought in a George Benson album for me last week. As he hasn't led me wrong as of yet, so I put the disc in expecting the best, and got way more. So this of course sent me on a mission to find more and more of Benson's material.

I found this (gasp!) online, (don't judge...) and had to share it with the rest of you. It has a fantastic rendition of white rabbit, rejecting Jefferson Airplanes quick and solid 2:32 mins of acidy rock for a more smooth/jazzy/jammy 6:58 mins of goodness.

Dont get me wrong, I love both versions, but this one stood out a bit more. Im still debating if I like Grace Slicks version (not the J/A version) more than this or not.

Lead Belly

I have been listening to Lead Belly since I first heard Kurdt Cobain, (who happens to be born the same day as me! Feb. 20th), sing "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" on the Nirvana Unplugged In NY record. If you haven't (by some freak chance) heard that album, or seen the performance I highly recommend picking it up. It was recently released on DVD as well.

So, Lead Belly. Beyond his music, I am not especially familiar with the artist as a person. So, I am not going to lie to you and spout out fiction. Instead I ask that you search out more information on this fantastic 12-string fingerpickin blues artist, and learn more about his music and of similar artists pertinent to the time period and music style.

This particular recording from June of 1949 is fantastic! Especially the surprising quality of the recording and mastering. As you will see in the included notes, this record was released on vinyl by the short lived PLAYBOY record label in the 1970's, possibly for the first time.

It is one of Huddie's last performances before his untimely death months later in December of 1949 from Lou Gehrig's disease.

I hope you enjoy this record and others by Lead Belly as much as I have, and search out more great material from the artist!

Sometimes you start something with the best of intentions, and then quickly, and prematurely nix all of your ideas and give up. A year or so later, you revisit the ideas, and either follow them as they are, or move in a different direction. Im facing the latter of the two.

This website was originally intended to be a web comic called catsattackyou! It wasn't about anything, and likely wouldn't have had any daily or weekly recurring characters, but was supposed to be a fun little time waster for people to visit on occasion.
As soon as I started, the dream was dead. I just could not bring myself to draw anything!
So, I let it be and moved on.

Now, I am back... and I am sure there will be comics up here on occasion, but this is going to be a site more for venting on popular issues, turning readers on to some new music (which I will share!) and I guess... like Seinfeld, will really be about nothing!

So.. enjoy and such.
